Frequently asked questions

Yes, when they are helpful for the child.

At Bertie and Belle, our team includes trained barbers and stylists who are experienced in both scissor and clipper work. We use the method that best supports your child’s comfort, confidence and hair type. Clippers are never rushed or forced and are only used if your child feels ready.

It is recommended to get a haircut every 6-8 weeks to maintain healthy hair and prevent split ends. If left too long the experience can become challenging your child.

It is recommended to get a haircut every 6-8 weeks to maintain healthy hair and prevent split ends. If left too long the experience can become challenging your child.

At Bertie and Belle, we recommend bringing your child for their first haircut between 6 months and 2 years old, depending on how fast their hair grows. Many parents choose to visit us when their baby’s hair starts getting into their eyes or looks uneven. Our experienced children’s hairdressers know how to make that first haircut a fun, stress-free experience.

Preparing a child for their first haircut can help make the experience less stressful. Parents can often make the experience positive by reading books about haircuts, bringing their favourite toys with them (also all our salons do have some entertainment available), or visiting the salon beforehand.

When used properly and sensitively, clippers can be very safe and comfortable for toddlers.

Our team is trained to introduce clippers slowly and calmly, allowing children to explore the sound and sensation first. For some toddlers, the gentle vibration can actually feel reassuring. If a toddler prefers scissors, we follow their lead.

The best type of haircut for your child depends on your child's hair type, face shape, and lifestyle. All our stylists are experts and are often asked for recommendations for boys' and girls' hairstyles, as well as age-appropriate cuts. Add an answer to this item.

The frequency of haircuts can vary based on the child's hair type and growth rate. Parents often ask how often they should schedule haircuts to keep their child's hair looking neat and healthy. As a general rule, it is time to get your child's hair cut if their hair starts to bother them, goes into their eyes or becomes unmanageable. Add an answer to this item.

Many parents are concerned about their child's comfort during a haircut. Common questions include how to handle a child who is scared or uncooperative and what strategies can be used to make the experience enjoyable. At Bertie and Belle, we make every effort to keep your child entertained by using tablets, stories and other entertainment.

Managing different hair types can be challenging, and parents often seek advice on the best haircut styles and techniques for curly or textured hair, including how to care for it at home. All our stylists are experts and are often asked for recommendations for boys' and girls' hairstyles, as well as age-appropriate cuts. Add an answer to this item.

Building a rapport with a specific stylist can make future haircuts easier. Parents often ask if they can request a certain stylist who is particularly good with children or has experience with their child's hair type. If you would like to request a certain stylist then please request during the booking process.

While we make every effort to make this possible we cannot guarantee a particular stylist.Add an answer to this item.

That’s completely normal, and it’s never a problem.

If your child feels unsure, we slow everything down. We may show them the clippers, let them touch them, or simply keep them nearby without using them. If your child isn’t ready, we won’t proceed. Confidence matters more than finishing a haircut in one visit.

While some barbers will cut children’s hair, they don’t always have the training, time, or environment designed for little ones. At Bertie and Belle, we specialise in children’s haircuts, offering:

  • Child-friendly styling chairs (including fun car seats!)

  • Gentle, patient stylists who know how to work with wriggling toddlers

  • A calm, welcoming salon designed for kids and families

Choosing Bertie and Belle means your child gets a positive, happy haircut experience, not just a quick trim.

The best haircut for your child depends on their hair type, lifestyle, and personal style. At Bertie and Belle, our most popular children’s cuts include:

  • Classic bobs (easy to manage and super cute)

  • Tidy fringes to keep hair out of their eyes

  • Short back and sides for active kids who want low-maintenance hair

  • Layered cuts to add shape and manage thickness

Our experienced kids’ hairdressers will help you choose the perfect cut, one that’s practical, stylish, and easy to care for between visits.

Never.

At Bertie and Belle, everything is child-led. Clippers are only used with your child’s consent and comfort. If at any point they feel overwhelmed, we stop. A positive experience always comes before the haircut itself.

Booking your child’s first haircut at Bertie and Belle is simple. We recommend:

Choosing a quiet time of day (after a nap or snack, when your child is happiest)

Bringing a favourite toy or comforter

Talking to your child about what will happen so they feel prepared

Our friendly stylists are experts at making first haircuts fun and memorable. We take the time to help your child feel safe and relaxed. You can even take home a keepsake lock of hair!

It’s common for young children to feel nervous or refuse a haircut, but at Bertie and Belle, children’s hairdresser specialists, we’re here to help!

Here’s what you can do if your child refuses a haircut:

Stay calm and positive. Children pick up on stress — use gentle encouragement instead of pressure.

Talk about it in advance. Read books or watch videos about kids’ haircuts so they know what to expect.

Bring comfort items. A favourite toy, snack, or dummy can help your child feel secure.

Choose a salon designed for kids. At Bertie and Belle, our salon is created especially for children with fun chairs, friendly stylists, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Book a visit just to look. Sometimes popping in to see the salon before the appointment helps build confidence.

Our experienced team knows how to work with anxious little ones. We take our time, use distraction techniques, and always aim for a positive, happy experience.

Cleanliness and hygiene are top priorities at Bertie and Belle. All our equipment — scissors, clippers, combs, and chairs — is thoroughly cleaned and sanitised between appointments. We follow strict health and safety protocols to ensure a safe, spotless environment for your child. Our team also uses disposable capes and regularly sanitises common areas throughout the day.

Our salons are designed with children’s safety in mind. We provide child-friendly furniture like secure sit-in car chairs, soft flooring, and distraction devices to keep kids comfortable and engaged. Our stylists are trained to handle little ones gently and patiently, and all staff undergo background checks and health & safety training. We also maintain strict cleaning protocols to create a safe, welcoming environment for all children.

To ensure your child gets the best possible experience with minimal waiting, we recommend booking an appointment in advance through our online system. This helps us allocate the right amount of time and specialist attention your child deserves. While some last-minute walk-ins may be accommodated depending on availability, booking ahead is the best way to guarantee your preferred time slot.

Our weekend slots are very popular and tend to fill up quickly, especially for first haircuts and sensory-friendly appointments. We recommend booking at least 2–3 weeks in advance to secure your preferred date and time. For busy periods like school holidays or special events, booking even earlier is advised.

Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases, baby haircuts are completed using scissors only.

Babies are still developing sensory awareness, and scissors are usually the gentlest option. Clippers would only ever be considered if genuinely appropriate and only with full parental discussion and agreement.

Every child is different.

Some children like the predictability and even sensation of clippers, especially for shorter styles or thicker hair. Others prefer scissors. Our role is to understand your child and adapt the approach to suit them not to use the same method for every appointment.

Yes. All clipper work at Bertie and Belle is carried out by trained barbers or stylists with specific experience working with children.

This training includes technical skill, sensory awareness, and how to introduce tools calmly and respectfully.

Absolutely.

Parents are always welcome to discuss preferences with us before the appointment. We’ll talk through what might work best and follow your child’s lead on the day.

Movement is completely normal for children.

We work in short, gentle stages and allow breaks whenever needed. If clippers aren’t suitable in that moment, we adapt. There’s no pressure to finish everything in one visit.

Because children aren’t all the same.

Offering both allows us to tailor the experience to each child rather than limiting them to one method. It’s part of our commitment to creating confidence-building, sensory-friendly experiences for families.

You don’t need to do much.

Talking calmly about the visit, watching a short video together, or letting your child hear clippers at home can help. Most importantly, reassure them that they are in control and that nothing will be done without their comfort.

Our team will guide you on the day.
